Chapter-3.Geography
Locating the Place on the Earth

Key words
Schedule: - It is a plan for carrying out a process or procedure.
Subtended: - Form an angle at a particular point.
Variation: -   IT is a slight difference in condition or amount in certain.
Land marks - the features which help us to locate places are called land marks.
Southern hemisphere -The south part of the earth is called southern hemisphere.
Northern hemisphere - The north part of the earth is known as northern hemisphere.
Lines of latitudes -Horizontal lines drawn on a globe or a map are called lines of latitudes.
Grid = A network of the lines of latitude and longitude intersecting each other is called a grid.
A. Tick the Correct Option
1.The equator does not pass through which one of the following continents? - Europe
2.The heat zone lying between 23*1/28 N and 66*1/2 N is: - Temperate Zone.
3.The longest circle drawn between two poles is: - Prime Meridian
4. When the time at 12 noon at 0* longitude, the time at 75* E longitude will be: - 5 p.m
5.Which one of the following is a correct statement about longitudes? - All of them have equal lengths.
B. Fill in the blank
1.The earth rotates from west to east.
2.All the places on the same meridian will have the same  local time.
3.The distance between two lines of latitudes is always  1* or Same
4.The Meridians  are the imaginary lines that connect the north and south pole.
5.Each degree of longitude   corresponds to a time difference of  four  minutes.
C.Match the followings
1.Two equal division of earth  hemispheres.
2.Latitudes are measured in  Degrees.
3.Tropic of cancer  23*1/2’ N.
4.British royal observatory  Greenwich.
5.The place through which standard Meridian of India passes  Mirzapur.
D.Answer the following questions in brief.
1. Which two basic points on the earth serve as the reference   points?
Ans north pole and south pole.
2.Why the torrid zone has the maximum temperature?
Ans Because it is situated between tropic of cancer and tropic of Capricorn, so it receives direct sunlight from sun
3.Which heat zone is most suitable for us to live and why?
Ans Temperate zone is most suitable for us to live because, where it lies that part receives moderate amount of sun light.
E.Answer the following questions.
1.State the main characteristics of parallel of latitudes.
Ans three main characteristics of parallel of latitudes are:
a.Lines of latitudes are also called parallel of latitudes.
b.Each degree of latitude is divided in 60 minutes.
c.Equator lies on 0* degree.
2.Why do we use standard time? explain with an example from India.
Ans Some countries lie on more than one longitude, so it would be difficult to time, so to avoid these problems standard meridian was adopted by all countries.

Do you know?
1.  In Latin a.m.  means ante meridian and p.m. means post meridian.
2.  Some countries have a vast longitudinal extent. that is why countries like Russia has nine and USA has four time zones.

Facts
Although, about 30 longitudes pass through India.
Russia has nine time zones.
The tropic of cancer is located at 23*1/2* north.
The tropic of’ cancer and “The tropic of Capricorn” marks the limits of Torrid zone.
A great circle divides the   earth in two halves, which is known as equator.

Indian standard meridian” is also known as “IST”.
Inside Questions
Q.1 What are the two reference points on earth?
Ans  north pole and south pole.
Q.2.What are the three heat zones on the earth
Ans Torrid, temperate and frigid zone.
Q.3.At which longitude India lies?
Ans  India lies between 68*7’E and 97*25’W longitude
Q.4.How many longitudes each hemisphere contains?
Ans Each hemisphere contains 180* longitudes
Q.5.How many minutes, our earth takes to cross one longitude?

Our earth takes 4 minutes to cross one longitude.
Q.6.What are the locations of these on the earth
The Tropic of Cancer - it lies north of the Equator, that is 23*1/2* N.
The Tropic of Capricorn - it is located south of the Equator in the southern hemisphere, that is 23*1/2*S.
The Arctic Circle - this important line of latitude is above ‘Tropic of Cancer” in the northern hemisphere, that is 66*1/2*N.
The Antarctica Circle - it is below the “Tropic of Capricorn “in the southern hemisphere, that is 66*1/2* S.
