Kingship   :  Since the king was the head of the state, he was the center of administration. It seems that it was felt necessary to raise to the throne a competent member of the ruling family. In the pre-independence period, as long as the Chahamanas acknowledged allegiance to the Pratiharas, it was not much necessary that the ruler should be endowed with distinct qualities so as to enable him to direct the ship of the state; for there was the overlord to guide him in difficult circumstances. A minor or a less capable person might very well occupy the position of the head of the state.
